Lovies

It's my very favorite holiday, and yes a deep love for chocolate may contribute to this affection. Valentine's Day came out of nowhere this year. I usually find myself counting down the days but today I woke up thinking, 'already!?'. I keep saying that I'm not overwhelmed and I have everything running along smoothly... and then I realize another month has slid right on by and the sheets still haven't been washed and I have no clean socks and we had hard boiled eggs for dinner (again) and oh wow, it's already Valentine's Day and we didn't do any baking or projects and crap!

But it's okay, because this day is really all about showing the people that are important to you some good old sappy love, and I am pretty sure I nail that one on a daily basis. So we celebrated with brownies (store bought- gasp!), a new teether for a teething baby, red lipstick for mama, and Little Smith's watercolor Valentines. I just think his paintings are amazing. I am turning into that mother that thinks my kid is a genius, supposedly he's behind on the so and so progression of drawing development whereby he should be producing half-baked stick figures... but man I could just watch him paint these beauties all day; announcing one is 'all finished' after only a few splashes and overworking another to a murky brown disaster that miraculously dries to reveal tones and layers... nothing short of inspired. You might just see smeared paint, but I guess I love this kid.

And now our Valentine's Day is drawing to a close, it's snowy and dark outside and we are waiting for James to get home so we can tell him we love him too, light a fire, perhaps some champagne for the adults once the kids are tucked in tight, with a side of chocolate, if you please.

*Happy Love Day*

  1. Gorgeous Lilly! It sounds like you celebrate this day in style! Your children are adorable.

We keep Valentines low key but my husband did cover our kitchen in red, heart shaped sticky notes and we enjoyed a yummy tasting plate and champagne for dinner. x

  2. young children's art is so lovely because they are just so free -- they don't have any negative feelings or feeling like it's not good enough...and i love that. i love that there's no right or wrong...they just scribble and draw and paint and talk...and then will just suddenly announce that they're finished. too bad that for most, it doesn't stay like that forever. olive experiences such joy when she's drawing and i hope she never loses that.

little smith's paintings are beautiful. :)

thank you for your comment about the sheets not being washed! ours are going for three weeks in a row and i was just feeling so crap about it...now i don't feel so bad. x

    1. I think you're right, I so wish we could preserve that freedom we have as kids. It's such fun to watch. And glad to have company wallowing in dirty sheets ;)

  3. I am loving the red lipstick on you! Very pretty.

Little Smith's artwork is wonderful. I really love how expressive kids are with their art. It makes me sad when they are taught to conform to "rules."

Happy Valentine's Day to you and your beautiful family!

    1. Thank you! And yes, there are some rules I wish we never had to learn. Growing up is complicated business!

  5. Aw, pretty mama! You wear that red so well! And wow, I do love those paintings by W. I must add, I swear Milo JUST started drawing stick figures and he's six-and-a-half. I was seriously worried for a while, but it seems that other things *eh hem* doing flips and long division in his head *eh hem* took priority. Ha! We must be uber proud of our kids, or who else will? Of course they are amazing!

But I really, really do like his paintings, Lilly. Happy Valentine's Day a day late.

    1. I think this is going to be my theme in parenting (well, one of many)... balancing some worry with lagging milestones against pride that he's 'too brilliant' to meet with convention. I just can't deal that every progression needs such evaluation... sigh. Thanks Lauren!

  6. Ah so lovely, from the lipstick to the art work! Of course little Smith is a genius-- look at his parents! And I utterly adore the picture of sweet littlest Smith focused on sticking her foot through the hoop-- so sweet!
