Fairy Towers

My mother always taught me to look for fairy circles, little rings of whitecap mushrooms woven around the trees and moss. I built tiny towers out of rocks and collected flowers and rotted scraps of bark to lay out for them. I closely examined every butterfly and moth, just to be certain it wasn't 'the one'. And then one day, we saw a fairy. It was a fleeting second, but we both just knew it was real. An overgrown dragonfly? A strange unknown insect? Maybe. Still, I prefer to sit in a patch of grass, watch my mother and baby boy stack rocks, and imagine a fairy just might dance around that tower, drinking from buttercups, late into the night. Why wouldn't she?

  1. How darling. I love that your mom is passing this along to your boy. And my mom always built fairy circles in the woods on our land. It was always fun to stumble upon them. At least I think it was my mom ;)

  5. Oh I always adored looking for fairy circles as a child. With my own kiddos, we lived in the woods, so fairy circles & towers & all the other tell-tale signs were all around us. It didn't hurt that my dad was forever telling them stories of leprechauns!

  6. Such a nice idea! My Grandma did something similar - she told us that there were fairies in the bottom of her garden (only hers, not ours) and that they made sweets. Whenever we visited we would run straight through her house and out the back to check in the undergrowth to see if the fairies had left us anything...we loved it!

  7. This is so wonderful. And I completely believe in faeries. Tori Amos even said, "I think people who can't believe in faeries aren't worth knowing."
