16/52

a portrait of my child once a week, every week, in 2013

At the market, my reluctant shopper. This is the face he gave me when I refused him a second 'doughnut' aka muffin (they were mini's). I have to confess that I've created a little market monster. I know that it's very bad form to allow a child to eat food that hasn't yet been paid for, particularly food that is crumb producing. I am totally that mother that gets scoffed at, we make a b-line for the muffin section in just about every market and he quietly ploughs through his baked goods while I push him around and shop in peace. I know it's lazy parenting... but we do always pay for the muffins!

  1. If you are getting scoffed at it is either by someone who has either never had children, raised their children in the 60's or are crazy! sometimes a muffin is just what you need to get through a shopping experience!

Anyway! Your photo of Little Smith is just so sweet! love it!

    1. Oh thanks Rebecca, I thought I could be the only naughty one here. I really did get schooled just last week, a woman in line behind me with a slightly older child said very loudly for my benefit, "no- we pay for our food before we buy it, it's not okay to eat things before they've been paid for"... I hung my head in shame :)

    2. I hate it when I come across people like that too. Always so judgemental and critical of others. People always give me the angry stare and look when I try to appease my child, without scolding/screaming back at him. All parents and women should be more understanding of each other... :/

    3. In these situations don't you want to turn to W and say "And WE don't passive aggressively shame people under the guise of teaching lessons." Ugh. haha :)

    4. LOL Julie! that is right! That woman just doesn't get it! The only time I have hung my head was in my own shame when I let my then 18mos eat a peach while in the store and realized I couldn't properly weigh it to pay for it when it came time to check out as it was mostly eaten. sigh. xo

  2. Dude, no way are you a lazy parent for that. I can't get through a grocery store trip without cracking open some food for my kids. Just today, I opened an enormous pack of string cheese at Costco just so Audrey would simmer down while I shopped. Grocery win.

  3. I don't feel bad AT ALL. My kids eat in the market if they're hungry and so do I. Sometimes you need sustenance to shop. ;) Walk proud girl. :)

Like you said, you are paying for it. If you threw the wrapper out and walked on, that would be a different story. That woman you mentioned sounds like a b***h.

  4. Oh, and THAT FACE. How can you refuse him?

  5. Oh my heavens that is a serious puppy dog face! One of the best I've ever seen!

And don't feel bad. I do this... times 3! And we always pay, too. But the trail of crumbs we leave... oye. I'm sure they hate seeing us coming!

  6. We are market eaters too :) I can't imagine a shopping trip without a packet of raisins or some crackers... Those eyes of his are something else. So expressive. Lisa x

  7. Oh we do too! I make myself feel better by rationalizing that its better than terrorizing everyone with a screaming toddler! And i am much more forgiving to other Moms now that ive been there!

  11. Ha! People that get their britches in a bunch over such things need to loosen up a bit, there are so many things to actually worry about, a kiddo enjoying a soon-to-be-paid-for muffin should produce no stronger attention than a smile. He sure looks cute with his crumb covered lips.

  12. Some call it lazy parenting. I call it crafty! And seriously... How can you say no to that face?!

  13. Muffin away, I say. Did you know Whole Foods has a kid's box up front at customer service? Free snack every visit!

  14. Oh I always do the same thing at the store, but the worst is forgetting that once they've eaten half a piece of fruit it can't be, um, weighed. Oops.

  15. Oh man! He is soooooo cute. I just want to kiss him! I can't imagine how teaching your child by scolding a complete stranger is effective... ridiculous. People get all bent out of shape for so many reasons. You just have to do what's best for you. You'll probably never see that lady again anyways. *thank goodness* I can't wait to be at the stage with my girl... I know it will be a fun new experience. :)

  16. Those eyes!! There is no saying no to those beautiful eyes.
You are not alone, we get the turned up noses and scoffs too when I let my daughter eat at the markets. But I think it is all part of the experience, we pick up and smell the beautiful produce we are going to buy and I think it is important we teach our little one what we are doing... There is no way I could leave the market without a delicious pastry (or two) so we cant expect our little ones to go without. Plus that is why someone invented the broom, to pick up those pesky crumbs. Happy doughnut eating!! x x

  18. I love that you all weighed in to tell me market eating is a-okay! What a relief, I was definately feeling guilty in this one. Now we'll be snacking proudly. Thanks guys!
