amaryllis bloom / january 21, 2013

My mother gives me an amaryllis nearly every year and it's always such an exciting treat when it opens up. I try to get them to last and re-bloom, but usually they just send up leaves. Once I did get a slightly deformed squatty flower in the middle of the summer, I was so pleased with it.

We are mostly healthy in this house after a restful week-end and hoping to stay that way! Sadly Big Smith didn't get Martin Luther King day off, I could have used the extra day. I wanted to do something to recognize the holiday for Little Smith, but he seemed to young to understand any of the suggestions that I read on line. I think next year he will be old enough to 'get it'. Do any of you have good suggestions for observing MLK day with little one's?

  2. Your pictures are always so gorgeous!! I always told my children stories from history, but then, that's sort of what I do lol. Fairness, justice, equality are all themes for the day~*

  3. So beautiful. My little one received an amaryllis from her great grandmother at Thanksgiving and she loved watching it stretch and unfold.

  4. These colors are beautiful. Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better. It is so hard to rest with little ones. As for MLK day suggestions, we aren't quite there yet, either, though we did read Milo a book about MLK. I'm sure as he gets older it will sink in!

  5. So pretty! I can never get my paperwhites to bloom again, either. Good to hear you are mostly healthy.

  6. I was planning on getting a book from the library about MLK geared towards preschoolers but I missed the day. Hopefully on our trip next week!

  8. Gorgeous flower. I am hopeless with plants, so I am sure I couldn't get it to bloom again either.

We don't celebrate MLK day here, so I don't know of an activity for little ones. I like Tabetha's idea of themes like fairness for the day. Maybe you could do an activity or discussion about sharing?
