big and little smoothies / summer 2012

During the summer we really got into making smoothies with fresh veggies and fruit. Now that the produce is less plentiful and temperatures are chillier we have cut them out of our daily routine... but I'm missing them, and judging by the way Little Smith slurped down a giant one at a cafe over the week-end, I think he is too.

Anyone have good recipes for healthy smoothies that are seasonally appropriate? Do people still drink smoothies when it's cold out? Somehow it feels strange having anything frozen with a sweater on, but maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to indulge in some hot cocoa!

  1. Do you guys juice? That's where I normally lean in the cooler months. Although I did just get Craig to pick up some smoothie stuff for me! There are sweaters and wool socks for a reason, yes? :)

    1. I do juice a bit, but mostly just to get carrots and kale less pulpy before adding them to a smoothie :) I should get into more creative juicing!

  2. I love smoothies and milkshakes but almost always stop drinking/making them when summer is over - funny really how affected we are by the seasons since they are still good! We have a juice machine but always forgets about using it, so many parts..! :-)

  6. I've had good success with adding finely ground rolled oats (uncooked) to smoothies. I've done it to make them more filling but it adds body and may be a way to have a nice thick smoothie that isn't icy. Maybe playing around with cooked squash or pumpkin and pumpkin pie spices? Or peanut butter/banana?

  7. I think smoothies are great year round. It's just harder to find in season fruit! Maybe more apple spice or banana blends? I've used frozen fruit a lot too.

  8. No good recipes I'm afraid, but I'm with you...I absolutely love them. more on the fruit side though rather then the celery and ginger.

  9. Ah, I'm with you. I wish I had some good ones, but I tend toward the ice cream problem in the winter... not so healthy, huh.

  10. We drink smoothies all the time, even when it's cold. Mostly because it's the easiest way to get a ton of fruits & veggies into my kids quickly. Audrey calls smoothies, "poodies." Heh.

  11. i am reading "the green smoothie bible" by kristine miles right now. she has seasonal recipes in there, but i think julie's onto something with juicing in the cooler months. my husband starts every day with a green smoothie and i did too when we were living in tropical zones. but, i can't do it now - am also nursing though and need a bit more substance to keep me going.

    1. My husband would like to start each day with a green smoothie too but he's always running to late :) That book sounds great, I'll have to check it out.

  12. One of my favorite smoothies is oats, almond milk, cinnamon, banana and ice. I drink it all the time, but the flavors are good for fall/winter!

  13. I love smoothies too! Mostly, I just make simple fruit smoothies with banana or strawberries and low fat milk, with a dollop of honey! Tastes delicious every time.
