Fun Little Things: Sippy Cup Remix

Yes, I have already covered our love of sippy cups a few months back in this post, but that love just keeps growing! I realize that as he nears two, Little Smith should be transitioning to an open cup, and we are working on that but as of now it's too messy a process to debut in public. Some of our needs have changed, so we've introduced a few new favorite cups to the rotation and also tossed some of our old stand-by's. I present our sippy cup remix, version 'not-quite 2.0'.

Previously we used Born Free cups for milk, we liked them for transitioning since they rarely spilled or leaked and had a nice soft spout. Now that Little Smith is a little older though, we've removed those from our collection for a few reasons; the plastic had grown quite scratched overtime, the valves had many pieces and were a bit of a hassle to keep track of and assemble, and most importantly Little Smith had discovered that turning them upside down and pushing on the spout made for an excellent paintbrush. I tried to stop that habit but at a certain point it was just easier to retire them.

We still love the Lifefactory glass sippy cup that I covered in the last post. It's so easy to keep clean and I love that it isn't plastic so there's no scratching. It is heavy and leaks a little so not the best to toss into a bag on the go. We typically save that one for home use, but it's our favorite around the house.

We also continue to use that very first cup I purchased, the Foogo with the spout. It's smaller size has made it our current go-to for milk (Little Smith has cut down on how much milk he enjoys). It's insulated so the milk also stays cool in my bag which was a definite plus during that hot summer we just survived. I may eventually get the hard spout top which is available on a different model since Little Smith tends to get more distracted by playing with the soft spouts these days.

I mentioned before that Little Smith didn't like straw style cups, and it really is true what they say about toddlers and those changing preferences because now the straw is very much our friend. I was so happy with the Foogo brand that I decided to add their straw cup to our collection. The lid snaps shut to prevent any leaking in the diaper bag and the straw disassembles into two pieces for cleaning. We use the handle that comes with the smaller cup because it's much easier for Little S, but this version actually does not come with a handle. I really like that the different styles from this brand all work together so that you can mix and match (although the straw is too long to work with the smaller cup style). I also think these are just cool looking objects, that counts for something right?

Another new favorite is this simple hard spout model by Nalgene. This one gets the closest to a typical sport water bottle. It has a one piece hard plastic lid with an integrated spout and a soft plastic removable valve to prevent leaking. It is plastic so it definitely does scratch, but it also means that it's much lighter weight than our other cups. This has become our first choice for throwing in the bag or car. We also use Nalgene's brand for our own water bottles (now that they are all BPA free) and Little Smith always likes having something similar to mom and pop. Of course this also means he needed his own stickers to pimp out his cup just like us (so yeah, those Phish and Smith stickers do not come with your purchase).

So there you have it, our four favorite cups for a twenty-two month old (two old and two new). They've all survived a lot of abuse and I'm really pleased with the quality of each.

They're even suitable for relaxing by the campfire and hiking, these are some tough little cups. I know we will soon be moving on to open cups and adult sport water bottles, but I sure do love my sippies!

  1. It is just amazing what they've come out with in the past 10+ years since I've had a sippy-aged baby. Too cool {and they look so neat too}.

  2. Our favorite are the nalgene and camelbacks (with the straw). Our kids are 3 and (almost 5) and we still use them!

  3. This is so helpful. I know we won't be at that point for a bit, but I'll keep W's preferences in mind when picking out some for Izzy in the future. My sister gifted us a little klean kanteen sippy at our baby shower, but that's all we have so far.

    1. I've hear good things about those Klean Kanteen's and we have the adult version but haven't yet tried the little one.

  4. We're a Foogo (straw) family but in the pink ;) We've had 3 or four in the rotation because my daughter just loves it especially when she's thirsty and needs to guzzle. She's transitioned to cup but she still asks for it and calls it "pink milk".

  5. Oh boy. You have some nice looking sippies here. Ours get lost so frequently, I am guilty of just running and buying what's handy at the store. Thankfully, we're pretty transitioned to big cups except for car use. But I bet you'll have the best looking big cups around when W gets to them!

  6. Wow, so much to consider! I also love the lifefactory ones, and have had to do a little investigation in how to get them not to leak. I don't know if you already know this (i found this information didn't come with the bottle), but you have to pinch the silicone valve every time you wash the cup, which will open up a little slit. So to close it, you tighten the cap, to release, you loosen the cap slightly, and then they kids can have a drink (they will have to suck, rather than the liquid just coming out), then just tighten it back up. Won't let liquid out (mostly) when they shake the bottle etc. Don't know if that will help you, and it certainly doesn't stop them from being heavy! x.

    1. Thanks so much for the tip Im. I didn't realize you had to repinch the valve each time, maybe that's why I often find it impossible to drink from and take it out! It does seem to still leak a bit when fastened tightly, but a good option is to use the alternate closed top that comes with the water bottles and just switch it for drinking- they are a great design :)
