You Say Tomato

Each year as we plan our garden we have a heated little debate, Big Smith (the self-proclaimed tomato king) wants more tomatoes, more more more... I love me some tomatoes but there comes a point where tomatoes have gone wild! Even with the blight this year, enough of our plants have survived that we are swimming in a sea of tomatoes.

I've cooked them, canned them a few ways, eaten tomato salad until I'm red in the face, given them away (yes I showed up at a faculty meeting with a large bag full to unload... to a bunch of black-wearing architects that I'm fairly certain thought I was nuts). They're a lot of work these tomatoes!

And so each year I turn to Big Smith and ask 'enough tomatoes for you?'... and apparently there will never be enough. We have already started the big debate for next year, and you better believe that I will be referring to this post to plead my case.

  4. I am extremely jealous of your predicament! Home-grown tomatoes are one of the best tastes (and smells) on earth! Our CSA tomatoes are wonderful, but still not as good as homegrown!
When all else fails, you can always juice them.

  6. Ha! Oh tomatoes are the best. But you CAN have too much of a good thing when it comes to summer produce, right? I'm pretty sick of zucchini and summer squash at this point. Your pictures are just beautiful! p.s. make a tomato pie- they are the BEST

  7. I can't really help you either. I would love to have some fresh grown tomatoes. We used to do the whole tomato sauce canning thing and I want to get back into that. So, lots of tomatoes would be good. :)

  9. But they are sooooo beautiful!

We had the same problem at the beginning of the summer, and now we don't have any! When it rains, it pours, right?

  10. I would munch those yummy tomatoes RIGHT down. But I am not swimming in them like you are.

Mmmmmm. My favorite tomato concoction is toasted bread, mayo, tomato, S&P. Open-faced. Done.

    And now I'm drooling.

  11. We are going to go the way of the Smiths next year and overdo it with tomatoes. We decided that we didn't have nearly enough of them this year, and want to plant at least 10 plants next spring.
