Garlic Yank

My mother acts as our garden consultant via telephone. She seems to be all knowing on things that grow and has a network of friends who are even more versed than she is. True I could crack a book or turn to the computer for concerns on planting and pests, but it's much more fun (and usually more useful) to ask my mom and get my question vetted by the troupes.

Since this is our first year planting garlic I wasn't sure when to pull it. Sunday afternoon, as we were heading home with a car full of groceries and plans for dinner, I got the call from my mom that it was time to dig that garlic out! Actually she said that the window was between July 4th and July 14th... and we were already a day overdue. While I know that there is no magic in those numbers, it sent me into a panic and I became determined to yank those bulbs asap.

I dropped Big and Little Smith off at home, barely slowed down for groceries to get unloaded, shifted dinner duty to Big Smith and the grill, and high tailed it to free our garlic. As I dug up the bulbs the whole garden was filled with the most wonderful smell... I think garlic just might be my favorite garden experiment. I'm going to need to be talked down from planting it in every bed this fall!

  1. Yum! I had fresh garlic last year for the very first time. It was amazing. The odor was so potent, my eyes would cry when I would chop it up. So cool that you hae your mom & friends to consult with about your garden.

  10. Thanks for all the garlic encouragement! And for those of you who sweetly said I look pretty, if there had been a close up you'd see that I'm covered in dirt and sweat. I think throwing on a dress says pretty even when you're not :)
