A Start

We had such a mild winter and a few crazy warm days in early March so I had high hopes of getting an early start to our garden. Then it got colder, we got busy with various other projects and the holiday, and here we are mid-April without so much as a seed sewn. Luckily this isn't the first time we've been a little late so I know there's plenty of time to tuck everything in for a wonderful garden. Neither one of us is the greatest gardener, my mother has a green thumb and she is always lending a lot of advice. Even if we make a bunch of mistakes growing veggies has been so much fun, it's like magic everytime and Big Smith has become the tomato master.

Our garden plot is about 14' x 25' and it's within a larger community garden nearby. I love everything about the community garden, being able to see what other people are up to each year and learn from their successes and mistakes as well as my own. It's also a lovely spot; a bluebird sanctuary with lots of trails for walking, biking, and cross country skiing.

I always do a lot of sketching and planning and I also like to make a garden key, it helps me get organized and is a fun way to keep track of what we planted each year. The top plan and key are our garden goals for 2012... we'll see if we get it all planted, it's ambitious for us but I think we can do it. I'm looking forward to sharing our progress. My one big hope is to get winter squash to work. Every year it looks great and then dies before we get to harvest anything. Squash, 2012 is going to be our year!

  1. That is amazing–good for you guys! I would love to do a garden. I sometimes grow one or two things, but I've never gone all out. I can't wait to see what it produces!

  6. Yay! Good luck! We had great luck with squash last year but no tomatoes. I'm hoping for a "tomato year." Also, love the idea of a community garden. I wish we had something like that around here so I could bounce ideas off of the old pros!

  7. Yay community gardens! I keep meaning to get a plot for us and somehow it never gets done. Ha, so is life. I love to hear about (and be envious of) the progress of your garden!
